What a day at Petco Park and we haven't even gotten through the game yet, or the big move still to come, for that matter.
Long story long...Kyle Blanks, Eliezer Alfonzo Wade LeBlanc and Everth Cabrera are here.
Josh Wilson (claimed by Seattle) Chris Young (DL) Cliff Floyd (60-day DL with torn labrum) and Nick Hundley (15-day DL with left wrist contusion) are out.
Of course Scott Hairston is likely to come off the DL by Tuesday, which means the move we've all been speculating about should come in a matter of mere days. Will it be Chase Headley to Portland for some seasoning, which had been rumored, or Brian Giles, who never emerged from the trainers room before today's game? The various baseball people I talked to today thought it was a foregone conclusion that Giles would be gone.
I like Brian Giles, both personally and professionally. Legal issues non-withstanding, there are few people that work harder at his craft than Giles. He's always been a good clubhouse guy, popular teammate and he plays the game the right way. But how about a grip on common sense. Come on people! The Padres have zero chance at the division. The Wild card? Don't waste your time. MLB Network's Harold Reynolds nailed it just a few days ago when said that the Padres are the most boring team to watch in baseball.
For those reasons, it's way past time for the Padres to play their kids and see if these guys even have a future with the organization. I'm not saying that Everth Cabrera, Kyle Blanks or even Chase Headley are the answer, but they'll be with the Padres next year. Brian Giles will not. This season is over- start playing for next year (actually the year after that).
I'm not sure how long Blanks will be here. Buddy Black said in his pre-game briefing that he thinks Blanks will get a few starts at first base during Interleague to give Adrian Gonzalez a bit of a breather. He wants to pick the right spot before they test him in the outfield at the Major League level. I ran into Kevin Towers (who said he's been avoiding the dumpsters) in the press box and he said Blanks is a guy that the organization wants to play ever day. Since he will NOT play every day at this level, there's a good chance that he'll only be here through Interleague play unless he makes it impossible for them to send him down.
Cliff Floyd is one of my favorite guys in baseball. Given his injury history, his off-season signing was puzzling to say the least because he was taking on a pinch-hitting role for the first time in his career. Add that to the fact that he has bad knees and it's even more baffling. But it looks as thought the Floyd era has come to an end in San Diego. Floyd will have surgery to repair his torn labrum next week in San Diego and will stay in town for the lengthy rehab, which is estimated to take at least two months before he can resume baseball activities. Even though he told Darren and Randy last week on the BP show that he had contemplated retirement frequently over the last months, he said today that he's not ready to hang it up and knows he can contribute to the game. It likely will not happen here but he believes there's a team out there that will have use for him.
By the way, based on tonight's performance, Wade LeBlanc should have plenty of time to catch his flight back to Portland...
